Healthy Appetizer Recipes

Many appetizers served in restaurants are laden with calories, fat, and sodium. Home cooks can be selective about what they choose to serve, and can also modify restaurants to meet their own nutritional needs.

  • Olive Garden Minestrone Soup is rich in vegetables, and low in fat. The sodium content can be controlled by using homemade broth, or by selecting a low-sodium variety of canned broth.
  • P.F. Chang's Lettuce Wraps are also low in fat and calories. The calorie and fat count can be reduced further by using white meat chicken instead of dark meat.
  • Use low-sodium broth when preparing T.G.I Friday's French Onion Soup, omit the provolone cheese, and reduce the butter used for sauteing the onions by half, to improve the nutritional profile of the recipe.
