Auntie Anne’s Pretzels Recipe

  1. In a mixing bowl, sprinkle the entire envelope of yeast over 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Stir and allow the yeast to dissolve.[4]
  2. Add the sugar and salt, stirring the mixture thoroughly to dissolve.
  3. Add the flour to the mix, kneading the dough until it is smooth.
  4. Set the dough aside and allow it to rise for an hour.[5]
  5. Spray an area of the counter or a cutting board with nonstick cooking spray.
  6. Turn the risen dough out onto the sprayed surface.
  7. Cut off strips of dough, measuring 1 1/2 inches wide and 8 inches long.
  8. Roll out the dough, moving from the center of the strip outward, to a thickness of 1/2 inch and length of 36 inches.[1]
  9. Shape the pretzel by forming a “U” with the dough strip, crossing the ends over each other twice and pinching them to the bottom of the “U”.
  10. Create a baking soda water bath by combining 2 cups of warm water with 2 tablespoons of baking soda.
  11. Dip each pretzel into the baking soda solution and place on a greased baking sheet.
  12. Allow the pretzels to rise for 30 minutes.
  13. Bake the pretzels for 10 minutes at 450 degrees.[6]
  14. Brush the pretzels with melted butter.
  15. Sprinkle the pretzels with coarse salt.
