  • For a simpler vanilla bean cheesecake, use whipped cream from a can. Aerosol whipped cream deflates quickly, so serve the cake immediately after applying whipped cream.
  • Vanilla is the only edible fruit of the orchid family. It is also the most labor-intensive agricultural crop produced today.[5] First, the orchid plant matures for at least 3 years before the first flowers appear. Once the fruit develops, it must remain on the vine for 9 months to continue growing. The fruit looks like a long bean, and once it is harvested, it is dried and cured to develop the distinctive vanilla flavor. Fully cured vanilla fruit, or pods, are then processed to make products such as vanilla extract, vanilla powder, and vanilla sugar.[5] Vanilla is one of the most popular flavors, not only for cooking, but for perfume and other industrial fragrance applications. Tire manufacturers even use vanilla to conceal the pungent aroma of the rubber in the tires. [5]
  • Due to the labor-intensive process to obtain vanilla pods, they can be very expensive when purchased at your local grocery store. If you are an avid baker, you can purchase vanilla pods in bulk from wholesale stores online. Some stores will also sell smaller quantities of vanilla pods at reasonable prices.
